This research essay was written during my Design Consequences unit at Queensland University of Technology. It looks at the evolving role of sunglasses, from protective eyewear to fashion statement and, more recently, emotional or social “shields.” Through desk research, I explored how environmental, technological, and cultural factors have shaped the design and meaning of UV lenses over time. The essay reflects on both the impact and contradictions of sunglass design. It was later turned into a print piece and exhibited at the QUT Journalism Awards
